Racial Preferences in Porn Are Shifting Thanks to Millennials and Gen Z

Porn— much like the rest of our society— seems to be evolving for the better.

Porn has long gotten a pretty bad rap. From out-and-out taboo, to fairly contentious, just two decades ago it wasn’t something that was openly talked about. But in the same vein, neither was gender, alt-sexualities, nor race. Breaking into the 21st century also broke down some serious social barriers to the ways that we think about things like sexuality, gender, and race. While these three subjects are essentially a given trait of being human— for years they were something that came with the same social black mark as discussing menstruation— you just didn’t talk about it.

Luckily for all of us, whether you’re into interracial porn or not, these walls are finally starting to crumble and incredible producers, directors, and adult film companies are finally starting to catch on. Creating the porn that the people are demanding. Don’t believe us? Check out any of the productions made by Blacked free of charge. This is just one of the many new studios that are popping up to better meet the ethical and diverse demands made by today’s porn viewing community.

A Growing Body of Preference

Our preferences as far as porn goes have undergone a bit of a glow up in the last few decades— as top performers are starting to break historic molds, long held fetishes are being more widely represented, and racial boundaries and tropes are beginning to be ground down. All thanks to the most recent cultures and generations that are dictating markets. Millennials and Zennials are largely to thank for these nouveau adult trends, particularly through their normalization of alternate sexualities as well as the concerted effort they have towards consuming more ethical porn.

For years, porn was fairly cookie cutter— blonde bombshell with a rack you could land a 747 on, gets railed by the friendly neighbourhood pizza guy. While this genre of porn still exists, it’s not what’s actually getting the hits in this day and age. What used to be considered nearly off-limits— fetishes like bondage, water works, teen, and incest— are all beginning to top search results when it comes to the porn we’re watching. But more than just that, the racial divide seems to be narrowing, as Black porn, Latino, Indian, Asian, and a number of other racially dominated porn is becoming more in demand, and less awkward.

This is because the newest generations of porn viewers aren’t getting on board with the more traditional tropes and exploitation of fetishizing race, instead just getting off one seeing Black sex, made with genuine Black actors. Or Indian, or Asian. The idea of being turned on by a person of a different race isn’t in-and-of-itself racist, however, how these roles were classically portrayed unquestionably was. With horrific underlying storylines and really obvious fetishization of skin tone had gotten to the point where it was nearly unwatchable. Fetish or not. Now, users seem to be much happier getting their fill of big Black members and tiny Asian booties in more realistic and less damaging ways. Specifically, with the productions made by higher-end production companies like Blacked.

More Representation, Less Fetishization

It’s not just the tired tropes that are being side-lined however, but also actors’ pay, headlining roles, publicity, and who is dominating the charts as far as our favorite pornstars to see. According to one data set, of the top ten most searched for pornstars on the web— none of them were white. In fact, none of the top 20 most searched for performers fit the busty blonde mold. Instead, many of them were from highly ethnic backgrounds, with Asian, Latino, and Black being the top ethnicities of choice.

This representation within the industry is indeed novel, particularly within the last ten years— but it really shouldn’t come as a surprise as Zennials, the newest generation to come of age in a porn viewer world, are the most ethnically and racially diverse of all generations yet. With nearly half of these post-millennials non-white. So, it stands to reason that as our culture and ideas of love are changing, so too are our preferences in adult content. Another refreshing change of pace for the newest trendsetters is that they’re also the best educated, which could readily explain this new and expansive boom in our lusty tastes.
